There is no specific treatment for Shigella, but symptoms can be treated with antibiotics.

The PDPH is urging residents to get vaccinated against Shigella, especially if they are at high risk of infection.

High-risk groups include:

  • Children under 5 years old
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • People who travel to areas where Shigella is common

The PDPH is also urging residents to practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of Shigella.

Good hygiene practices include:

  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Avoiding contact with people who are sick
  • Eating only cooked foods
  • Drinking only boiled or bottled water
