The flu season typically peaks in January or February, but cases are already starting to rise in Pittsburgh. The Allegheny County Health Department has reported more than 1,000 cases of the flu so far this season, compared to just 11 cases at this time last year.

The flu virus is spread through droplets that are released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People can become infected with the flu by inhaling these droplets or by touching surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus.

Symptoms of the flu can include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and body aches. The flu can be serious, especially for young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions.

There are several things people can do to protect themselves from the flu, including:

  • Getting vaccinated against the flu
  • Wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings
  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue
  • Staying home from work or school if you are sick

If you think you have the flu, it is important to see a doctor right away. There are antiviral medications that can be used to treat the flu, but they are most effective when started early.
